We’re always looking for creative ways to enhance our food offerings – have a favorite food truck? Connect us! We regularly have a grilled menu from Kent Island Crab Cakes, local food trucks, caterers or other offerings. Lifelong Marylanders, we started Blackwater Distilling in 2008 because we were irresistibly drawn to our state’s unique distilling history.

Before Prohibition, Maryland produced what was widely regarded to be the nation’s finest whiskey, a distinct style called Maryland Rye. During the 13 years of Prohibition, Maryland’s enterprising farmers continued to turn their plentiful harvests into high-proof “swamp lightning” in stills hidden among the coves, inlets and marshes of the Chesapeake. Oystermen and crabbers smuggled the “good stuff” up and down the Bay, evading Federal Revenue agents and the Coast Guard, finding safe haven among the close-lipped communities that lined the tidewater.

Today, as Maryland’s first fully licensed distillery to open since the early 1970’s, we are committed to cultivating that independent spirit by making distinctive craft spirits that stand apart from the crowd, using the most exceptional ingredients, and furthering our rich Chesapeake Bay heritage. Few times in life does one truly have the opportunity to ‘pioneer’ an old way of life. We hope you’ll join us on the adventure!

Let me say…

My significant other and I have done many stops on the Bourbon Trail. We love distillery tours and seeing how each place differs.

We were in Baltimore for a weekend in April and our last day was just a rainy mess. I was looking for anything to do and came across the Blackwater distillery… And it was open on a Sunday.

We showed up and spent nearly 2 hours there learning about their process, being bribed to come back and help bottle, and tasting all their wonderful small batch liquors. We ended up buying Sloop Betty and Coffee Rum… And then a bunch of gear. I wear that hoodie every work weekend, when I wish I was drinking instead.

The guy working that day was. Incredibly knowledgeable and loves his job.

If we are ever back in the area, hopefully we will get to stop by the new place!
